AP Art History

ap art history

The College Board and AP Central offer the following explanation of the AP Art History Course:
The AP Art History Course explores such topics as the nature of art, its uses, its meanings, art making, and responses to art.  Through investigation of diverse artistic traditions of cultures from prehistory to the present, the course fosters in-depth and holistic understanding of the history of art from a global perspective.  Students learn and apply skills of visual, contextual, and comparative analysis to engage with a variety of art forms, constructing understanding of individual works and interconnections of art-making processes and products throughout history.

AP Art History is designed to be the equivalent of a two-semester introductory college or university art history survey course.

There are no prerequisites for AP Art History.  Students who have been successful in humanities courses, such as history and literature, or in studio art courses are especially encouraged in enroll since those experiences will likely support and enrich the context of the art history course.

The MASH Course Selection Book offers the following description of the course:

The AP Art History course is set up to be offered on an every other year rotation.  However, if there is enough student interest and scheduling availability for the AP Art History teacher, it will be offered on a yearly basis.  For planning purposes, the AP Art History is scheduled to be offered during the 2017-2018, 2019-2020, 2021-2022, 2023-2024 school years.

AP Art History is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to identify works of art and architecture and place them into an historical context.  AP Art History traces the development of human artistic endeavors from Prehistoric art to Contemporary art.  This course prepares students for college level courses by making demands on them equal to those of full-year college introductory courses.  The course requires extensive reading, discussion and analysis of works of art.   Art is studied and analyzed in its historical, political, and religious context.  Students will develop skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of an informed judgment and present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in an essay format.

Students interested in taking AP Art History are required to meet with the teacher of AP Art History to review the course requirements and obtain summer assignments.

Students may take the Advanced Placement test to apply for college credit.
