Activity 2 - First US launch of astronauts in almost 10 years! Read, watch and let me know what you think! in Google Classroom

Activity 2 - First US launch of astronauts in almost 10 years! Read, watch and let me know what you think!

Read the details below and the attached article. After the launch on Wednesday respond here with any questions you have about the launch, space programs, NASA, rockets, etc. How does the launch make you feel? The goal here is to enjoy some science in action and respond to me.

This Wednesday afternoon SpaceX and NASA will send the first US astronauts to space from American soil in 9 years. When the shuttle program was ended in 2011, NASA did not have a way to send our astronauts to space. NASA astronauts have been going to space using rockets from other countries, namely Russian Soyuz rockets. The private company, SpaceX, (meaning not a government agency) has developed a capsule and rocket that carries humans into space. This will be the first full flight of the Crew Dragon capsule with actual humans inside. Space X has been successfully sending cargo and materials to the International Space Station for years, but this is the first time we are sending humans in this vehicle.

Takeoff is scheduled for 4:33PM Wednesday May 27. Pre-launch coverage starts around 12:15PM the same day. You can tune in to the NASA Livestream on YouTube or SpaceX's feed, both linked below.

I've included an article about the astronauts, SpaceX, and how this launch is a historical event. It is a cool easy read from The Verge, not a scientific publication If you'd like, I recorded myself reading the article aloud, if you'd prefer to listen. That's the mp4. Lastly, I've included a link to a simulator/game that lets you attempt to dock the capsule with the International Space Station.

Activity 1-CHOICE OF Planetary Motion Lab in Google Classroom

Activity 1-CHOICE OF Planetary Motion Lab

For this activity you may choose 1 of the 2 labs to complete:
Option 1: "Gravity and Orbits" This will take you through a Simulation on the motion of the Earth and the Moon. The simulation works with HTML5 and so is a good choice for any browser. I have created the instructions and questions to accompany the simulation in Nearpod. You will access the Nearpod, signing in with your full name, where you will complete Draw It! activities, in addition to answering open-ended and multiple choice questions as you work through the lab. Once you've completed the Nearpod, you will click Turn In here.
Option 2: "How do Objects Move in Space?" This will take you through a Simulation of the motion of planets and stars. The simulation works with Flash, so if you've had trouble with that in the past, you may need to opt for the second choice. You may print out the document, and upload pictures of your completed work here when you are done, or insert images of your work into the doc as you go if you have the capability. You will be drawing a lot in both activities!
Option 3: Complete both labs! Leave a comment on which you preferred and why!

Activity 1: Fun Science-Stars in Google Classroom

Activity 1: Fun Science-Stars

Read the passage from the book, "Fun Science: A Guide to Life, the Universe and Why Science is So Awesome" by Charlie McDonnell. As you read, take notes in your notebook about the star types. Pay particular attention to connections between the stars (such as how one type of star can become another, and why). Once you are finished reading, create a drawing (in Google is fine) that shows a sequence of changes for our sun. Include key terms from the reading to label your drawing (simple shapes like circles are fine for this, but details such as color should be carefully considered.) For an added challenge, create a second timeline that shows the path taken by a different kind of star to our sun. Because this is activity 1, it will not be the same as what you make at the end of this lesson--you have more to learn! Give it a try, and upload your creations here.

Greenhouse Effect

Here is Activity 3 for our Science for Social Distancing. This is optional extra practice on the Greenhouse Effect. We learned about this in our last unit, and did an online lab, but it's a pretty important concept to keep fresh in mind before we move on to new topics.

As previously mentioned, this activity is optional and intended to keep you engaged with our class during our separation.
