Advanced Placement United States History is a college level course offered at the high school level to students of high ability and strong intrinsic motivation. The course is a two-semester survey of American History from the age of exploration and discovery to the present. Emphasis is placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, essay writing, interpretation of original documents and historiography. Students will be using a basic text, Brinkley’s American History: A Survey, and a wide variety of primary and secondary readings from other sources. Success requires the ability to acquire information independently, the continued development of good writing skills, a commitment to hard work and excellence and the ability to make contributions to class discussions and debates. This course prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon them equal to those of full-year introductory courses. Having taken the class, students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Examination offered by the AP College Board in early May. Students who do well may qualify for college credits, or for the waiver of required American history courses in college.
