Joel Covert - School Counselor, serving MASH students with last name L~R

Welcome!

“One of life's quiet excitements is to stand somewhat apart from yourself and watch yourself softly becoming the author of something beautiful." ~Norman Maclean, A River Runs Through It. I spend a fair number of days each month in smalls streams with a fly rod in hand, and a friend not far away, in piscatory delight but pondering how to get that mysterious and beautiful trout to take my fly. Then, with some persistence, new thinking and tiny tweaking, it happens...and it's magical.

As we head into a new year, we have the opportunity to write our collective and individual story. The current chapter can be pretty messy at times and far from what we planned, but here we are. But, I believe that we have the opportunity to write something adventurous, gracious and transformational. Maybe it's a story in which we are our brother's and sister's keeper - providing space and time for someone to share their pain or confusion, or laugh a little over something silly (to not take oneself too seriously), or go for a walk to enjoy things not seen on a screen, or help a friend with Math or Science. Or, possibly some time on the water where Maclean states, "all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.

I'm looking forward to us writing our story together this school year. I'm just an email away. Please reach out to me. I'm happy to meet with you in person, zoom meet or talk on the phone. I'm thinking of you and look forward to see you author beautiful moments at MASH.

  • I'm in my 19th year as a school counselor in the Mechanicsburg School District. I spent my first 10 years at our middle school and this is my 9th year at MASH.
  • I earned my bachelor's degree from Miami University of Ohio and my Master's degree from Shippensburg University.
  • I am a National Certified Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor and a member of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).
  • I'm privileged to be a part of a dynamic, creative and caring team of school counselors and an administrative assistant at MASH.
  • I ride weekly with a cycling club, am a private therapist on the side, I'll take the mountains over the beach (unless I get both in Maine) and tea over coffee, bbcue ribs and blueberry cobbler are divine and I like to fall asleep to a good book.
  • If you spend enough time with me, you'll eventually end up with a fly rod in your hand in some of the prettiest places around.
