Homework

Your student learns and works on skills needed to be as independent in the adult world at school.  Each student is on their own path towards this independence, but practicing these skills in multiple environments only continues to help them be successful when they finish school.

At the beginning of each month, a themed set of tasks that your student can work on will be sent as "homework".  Students are not required to complete all the tasks or even the worksheet, as it is not graded, but strongly suggest your student work on these skills at home, as they just reinforce what we are working on.  As stated each student’s ability is different, so the expectation for each student is for them to be as independent at the task as possible and if they do the task multiple times through the month, they are showing an increase in their independence.

When setting your student up for success, you might want to choose a task for them to do for the day/week.  You might show them how to do it in small chunks, then have them do it after you do the small chuck.  You might have them do the first part of the task, then have them watch you complete, or any way that works for your student. A piece of advice we can offer is, have patience.  Many of our students can take up to 4 times the amount of time to complete a task than what we can do.  This is due to a variety of reasons, but having the expectation that they will complete it, is the goal, then they can work on how long it takes them.

Students will earn classroom money to use to pay their bills or to purchase items in the classroom store.  To earn this money, they have to mark the dates below each task when done and have a family member’s signature on the back of the page.  By signing the form, you are letting us know that they did work on these skills.  Students can work on tasks more than once, they just need to write down each day they did the task.  The paper needs to be returned by the first of the next month for students to earn their money.  There is a portion under your signature where you can give us feedback.  We welcome input on how your student did, and would love to show the students that we are very proud of their work on the tasks.  Even though each month we will move on to a new set of skills to work on at home, we encourage students to continue to work on the skills they worked on in the months prior.  As we stated above, the ultimate goal of all of our students is to be as independent as possible in the adult world.
