hello parents and guardians of science students this year I am your child 9th grade Earth and space science teacher Miss Porter and I'm here to give you some information in this video about what to expect during this year as your child is learning science so are you in this video a little bit about my experience and background I'll go over the structure of the course in San Jose expectations that I have for your student in class and at home finally move management how to contact me encouragement for communication so little bit about me this is my 12th year here at Mash in that time I talk all the levels of Earth and space science and I've also taught biology so I'm well aware of what your child needs in order for their next year's and Science and to be successful this year I'm teaching level 1 and level 3 is ice bad I am a mother I have two teams in the district and Graves 10 and 11 so I am fluent in 14-15 year-old I've been through it live with it and thought it for I definitely know what you're dealing with at home with teenagers my background I have started my application in biology and I got my bachelor's from college and then I went back and decide to be a teacher friend. My my teaching certificate and Master's in instruction from Drexel and then most recently I finished my masters in geoscience for Mississippi State this is because with geoscience and Earth and space I really wanted that kind of content knowledge to go along with the biology that I have I had known as all of these courses are as we are traveling to different modes of learning face to face and the remote learning day so I just want to give you a little bit about My Philosophy for how these days will be used in our face-to-face days it's really important to me that the students are doing science so they will be engaging in investing we're using ngss o'er the Next Generation science standards really drive the important performances that your students need to be able to do so I'll be presenting them with phenomena things that they observe in their own lies and nature will be using scientific information and skills to explain those phenomena Explain how and why things happen that's going to be the main focus of the two days each week we spend together that time will be very collaborative 60 apart of course I jumped with my students they need to learn everything there fourth grade teachers tried to Eastham about using 6-inch voices and I'm asking the musics put voices so that they can work with a partner and hear each other and collaborate but stay safe during this time so social learning is going to be really important part of our in class days I think our kids need that social interaction they need that for their Learning and Development and just their General well-being + science is best done when you have people to bounce ideas off of them and interact so we want to capitalize on our ability to be together on those days that means I'm putting the part that can be more independent it can be pasted the remote days are school days and it is expected that your child login each day and work with the tasks that I have assigned the kinds of things I'll have them do on a remote days are things like lessons and lectures and notes that you might think of in a traditional class but I have recorded my lectures using a program called nearpod that is interactive it allows us to stop and answer questions during the lesson and see how they're doing taking collaborate they can straw they can even record their responses with their voice if they'd rather do that than to type but I really love that cuz I get to hear the students voices and listen to their thinking I'll also a sign practice activities sometime Caesar online Labs or like extension activities that help build on the understanding that we're doing they often will connect what we were talking about in class with the lecture notes and book things that they will be doing at home weekly quizzes this is going to be very closely connected with any lectures and notes and that sort of content men to keep them on track give him an idea of how well their understanding of material that they're working with independently and it also keeps my finger on the pulse of understanding I get a weekly update of how well their understanding the content it were using in class so again just an emphasis disease count as school days your child's participation is used to determine their attendance but more so than that we're trying to teach in the semester we spend out everything that we can we're focusing on the essentials but it really is a five-fold a week with two different person and three that are remote graded categories include three General ideas we have Gathering and processing scientific information reasoning and communicating scientific core ideas and application and transfer of science Gilt that's 20% as a grade that's kind of they're interacting with the first stages of Investigations some of the reading assignments in the lecture type of assignment LevelUp is the reasoning and communicating scientific or ideas so really grappling with and applying the scientific understanding that they've got and Austin will have them flipgrid video to explain their thinking and things like that and finally have the last 40% of the grade for application and transfer of science skills and here's where we're going to ask them to use what they've learned and apply it a new situation or to explain a related phenomenon like what would be an assessment of their ability to use everything that we talked about in to transfer those skills that look like for a guy where is having these performance task weekly and that's where they're going to meet the expectations that I set out at the beginning of a week and they're going to have an opportunity to perform traffic could be a to explain something could be the model something in those can take a variety of forms other items that I'll be keeping track of is their completion of nearpod lesson this is like the participation in class lectures that just did it down on their remote days I'll be posting a new near pot each week there may be weeks where I break it up into a couple of new pause but for the most part the plan is to have one large nearpod they can face that out over a cup they're also expected to complete a science notebook each day of the course and that includes students are supposed to be keeping a notebook Journal of everything that they're doing in class so top of each page includes the topic and the date and then the notes even if it's just say this is what I did say and I completed this assignment at a minimum you can also complete lecture notes along with in your Potter or whatever it is that we're working on that particular day to check that notebook is to look at the schedule a time to show you in a little bit and check for at least one page item in that schedule these are really closely aligned to the lectures and to the book reading assignment and the things that students are learning remotely play for them to check their understanding and if they're doing a good job of learning everything that they need to in the remote setting and it also gives me that feedback up of how well students are learning those kinds of things and where I might need to worst things in class classroom each Monday I'll be posting a picture that looks similar to this one this is this week's schedule of assignments for the week and I've broken it out students by BJ's and a day's if your student is in the end of the alphabet they would be looking at the orange section of the schedule and if they're in the top of the alphabet the green are the A's schedule so I put The Vedas first simply because these students are starting their week on a remote day on a Monday and I thought that they would look to the very first thing at the very top of the of the list restarting your day if I can point them in the right direction so I thought it would be the easiest for RB students to have their schedules at top so you'll see that on the schedule it is showing you three online days and then Benise at the two face-to-face days and what in these boxes in these days is going to be most the time identical between the two routes between the egerton the Beavers so for example on Monday of this week RB day students that started working in our online textbook and learning management system called masteringgeology and they worked on a practice activity and took a quiz on Monday are a students were beginning an investigation about density and a color stacking so you can see it over here, we're working on with that one we all wrapped up our last investigation about test funny so you can ask your students in an expert in what causes dust bunnies to form all students are remote on Wednesdays are going to always be the same thing often times I will use the Wednesday as a collaboration day if I have groups of students from across the alphabet or process classes that are working together then they can use that Wednesday when they know everybody's School to collaborate a lot of different types of assignments but this is kind of a pattern for how I'll run the things we can we can now always on a Monday they can check for and then also all of the assignments are listed in Google Classroom so they can click on each one and just cross-reference it with this snapshot and introduce yourself to me very long most of the questions are optionally with your phone it'll bring up that short Google for thank you so much for joining me in this video and please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions or concerns at any time thank you
