hello parents and guardians of science students this year I am your child 9th grade Earth and space science teacher Miss Porter and I'm here to give you some information in this video about what to expect during this year as your child is learning science so are you in this video a little bit about my experience and background I'll go over the structure of the course in San Jose expectations that I have for your student in class and at home finally move management how to contact me encouragement for communication so little bit about me this is my 12th year here at Mash in that time I talk all the levels of Earth and space science and I've also taught biology so I'm well aware of what your child needs in order for their next year's and Science and to be successful this year I'm teaching level 1 and level 3 is ice bad I am a mother I have two teams in the district and Graves 10 and 11 so I am fluent in 14-15 year-old I've been through it live with it and thought it for I definitely know what you're dealing with at home with teenagers my background I have started my application in biology and I got my bachelor's from college and then I went back and decide to be a teacher friend. My my teaching certificate and Master's in instruction from Drexel and then most recently I finished my masters in geoscience for Mississippi State this is because with geoscience and Earth and space I really wanted that kind of content knowledge to go along with the biology that I have I had known as all of these courses are as we are traveling to different modes of learning face to face and the remote learning day so I just want to give you a little bit about My Philosophy for how these days will be used in our face-to-face days it's really important to me that the students are doing science so they will be engaging in investing we're using ngss o'er the Next Generation science standards really drive the important performances that your students need to be able to do so I'll be presenting them with phenomena things that they observe in their own lies and nature will be using scientific information and skills to explain those phenomena Explain how and why things happen that's going to be the main focus of the two days each week we spend together that time will be very collaborative 60 apart of course I jumped with my students they need to learn everything there fourth grade teachers tried to Eastham about using 6-inch voices and I'm asking the musics put voices so that they can work with a partner and hear each other and collaborate but stay safe during this time so social learning is going to be really important part of our in class days I think our kids need that social interaction they need that for their Learning and Development and just their General well-being + science is best done when you have people to bounce ideas off of them and interact so we want to capitalize on our ability to be together on those days that means I'm putting the part that can be more independent it can be pasted the remote days are school days and it is expected that your child login each day and work with the tasks that I have assigned the kinds of things I'll have them do on a remote days are things like lessons and lectures and notes that you might think of in a traditional class but I have recorded my lectures using a program called nearpod that is interactive it allows us to stop and answer questions during the lesson and see how they're doing taking collaborate they can straw they can even record their responses with their voice if they'd rather do that than to type but I really love that cuz I get to hear the students voices and listen to their thinking I'll also a sign practice activities sometime Caesar online Labs or like extension activities that help build on the understanding that we're doing they often will connect what we were talking about in class with the lecture notes and book things that they will be doing at home weekly quizzes this is going to be very closely connected with any lectures and notes and that sort of content men to keep them on track give him an idea of how well their understanding of material that they're working with independently and it also keeps my finger on the pulse of understanding I get a weekly update of how well their understanding the content it were using in class so again just an emphasis disease count as school days your child's participation is used to determine their attendance but more so than that we're trying to teach in the semester we spend out everything that we can we're focusing on the essentials but it really is a five-fold a week with two different person and three that are remote items for the class am I level three class size kind of categorize everything in about is five types of task performance task are the biggest these are items that kind of take the play this is a test in this course I'm not going to give him standard paper and pencil test instead each the nominal that we study there's there's a goal something that your child should be able to do or explain or model and being able to do that will be assessed and graded much like a test grade would be so these are going to be about two times per marking. And they'll have their notes available the Damned don't have the Tesla lab notes that we taken and all of that to assist them on those performance test as we approach our first one I will be sending some information poem about how you can help your child prepare for that if they're feeling that they need more preparation of the nearpod I mentioned that's like our lecture lesson so each week I'll be posting one of those lessons and while they're watching the nearpod once they're finished with they can complete their digital interactive notebook science notebooks are really important part of my class and for level 3 this year I am designing a digital notebook interactive notebook that I'm posting to Google classroom that your student can complete as we're going through both are in class work as well as are at home remote work so the notebook is really the unifying piece that is going to bring everything together so if you want to see what we're working on in class in person and also how things are going in the remote days do you can take a peek at their interactive notebook the quiz is the weekly quizzes as I said going to be a good check in for the content understanding and then I'm also giving a behavior and participation grade each face-to-face day these face-to-face days is about 5.6 time to read Anchorage the collaboration and the work ethic in the questioning and all of the things that we're trying to Foster during those in class days you might be some other assignments that show up that don't fit neatly into one of those five categories and okay but generally this is the flow or the pattern of work that will be doing in this class so I have been setting up these little schedules each week for our students and trying to improve them all the time to make him more understandable for everybody but the brand new so if you are in the lower house and are Abby days to your your student would look orange chart here at the top and I put that at the top because they first need to look at their work on Monday independently so the start of every week the B students are starting on their own the a student I figured there first day they're going to see me in class and we're going to go over this list together so I thought they could afford to be at the bottom of the of the picture there so is our green DJs are orange in this case so the weekdays are sorted for each of these into three online work days and two face-to-face days and those are similar for both the and the Bee so much for our B group they're doing this independently innocent this week's time you'll see the week beginning September 21st and they're taking quiz number to a link they can click in Google Classroom to and they're going to begin their nearpod lecture I don't always expect them to do it all in one day and that's okay so the Wednesday is when they're going to come back and finish up that nearpod and look at their digital interactive notebook and then I have a practice assignment for them on Thursday completing the rock cycle computer introduction you'll see if those same three activities are occurring for my a student but just on Tuesday Wednesday Friday and then in class we have our investigations that we're doing and so one of them that we're doing this week off to ask him about this density to Texas where we looked at how we stacked liquids in a instead of them all mixing together and this is going to relate to how the materials that make up the inside of the earth were able to stack and not mixed together so we have some very discreet layering inside of our Earth all right the last visit and introduce yourself to me most of the questions are optional in that link QR code with your phone it'll bring up that short Google form so thank you so much for joining me in this video and please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions or concerns at any time thank you
